Everybody’s all atwitter about Summerfest — The World’s Largest Music Festival — running until July 6 on Milwaukee’s lakefront. I’ve been blasé about it since I graduated high school and they stopped booking KC & the Sunshine Band, Ziggy Marley & the Wailers and the Violent Femmes each and every year at the Miller Oasis.
But as Posh says, I only get excited about something if it can be related to the Brewers — and that’s why I’m totally ready to get my Summerfest on! Pan Am is playing for the third straight year at the ’fest. Dan Attanasio, son of Brewers chairman and principal owner Mark Attanasio, is the bass player. From the press release:
“Thumping on a sunburst Hofner, the bass-guitar that Paul McCartney made famous, Dan Attanasio lays a melodic and bouncy foundation for the band. Sammy Perlmutter rounds out the bunch with chaotic (but never frivolous) beats in the vein of Keith Moon or, say, Animal from the Muppets!”
The band has also played at the Troubadour, Whisky a Go Go, The Roxy Theatre and the Knitting Factory. And they’re booked at the Derby on July 16, according to their Myspace page. The band sounds kind of cool, but I’m totally not going. They’re playing Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at the Harley Roadhouse. I’ll be at the Brewers game — duh.
Do more drummers aspire to be John Bonham, Keith Moon or Animal from the Muppets? I prefer Joe Russo of the Benevento/Russo Duo (8 p.m., tomorrow at the Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard) and ?uestlove of The Roots (July 4, 10 p.m., Miller Oasis).
